Basically crossfit involves functional fitness. On their website they post daily workouts that have odd names (usually a girl name like "the Betty"). The workouts vary but consist of compound movement exercises and are basically done for time. For example today's workout is:
MONDAY 100215
For time:
155 pound Squat clean, 15 reps
30 Toes to bar
30 Box jump, 24 inch box
15 Muscle-ups
40 pound dumbbell Push press / push jerk, 30 reps
30 Double-unders
135 pound Thruster, 15 reps
30 Pull-ups
30 Burpees
300 feet Walking lunge with 45lb plate held overhead
Post time to comments.
These exercises are basically done back to back and you try to complete the whole series as fast as you can.
There are some exercises that are Crossfit specific and they have video examples on their site. People perform these workouts (either alone or with others) and post their results on the website as a sort of workout journal and it allows competition. The workouts really combine aerobic conditioning with compound movements that make for great training for those that want functional strength and endurance (think police, fire fighters, military) and is similar to military elite forces physical training.
The website is a little confusing at first but if you read the faq and introduction pages it makes sense and actually seems pretty worthwhile. There are some guys that get pretty yoked and shredded doing this.
