That sounds like an awesome partner to me!
When I first got into lifting I used to really want to train with a partner as it was hard to get motivated on my own, but these days i've gotten used to it.
From time to time i get a chance to train with a few guys i know at the gym if we arrive at the same time, who are much like the partner you mentioned above - always trying to push you; but most of the time it's just me and my mp3 player!
